The Archive of Lost Mountains is a collection of drawings, data and models that documents the destruction caused by mountaintop removal coal mining in Central Appalachia. Using publicly available geospatial data, an algorithm was developed for identifying the hallmark plateaus left behind by mountaintop removal. From there, historic topographic surveys were used to digitally reconstruct the peaks that once occupied these sites, resulting in representations that resurrected their past geologic form. Part public history, part geological specimen, the Archive of Lost Mountains exposes the scars of mountaintop removal and establishes tangible relics for the preservation of place and memory.
