The Journal of Architectural Education (JAE) Award was instituted in 1985 and is now given annually for outstanding peer-reviewed articles published in the Essay, Design, Narrative, and Image categories during the preceding academic year. Nominations are solicited from the JAE Editorial Board for each year’s awards, for a final decision by the ACSA Board of Directors.

JAE Essay Award 2023: Janet McGaw, Alasdair Vance, and Uncle Herb Patten, “A ‘Holding Place’: An Indigenous Typology to Mediate Hospital Care” in JAE 76.1: Health, edited by Sara Stevens and Joy Knoblauch.

In “A ‘Holding Place’: An Indigenous Typology to Mediate Hospital Care,” co-authors Janet McGaw, Alasdair Vance, and Uncle Herb Patten propose a new Indigenous-led architectural typology–“a holding place”–intended to mediate hospital care that addresses significant health disparities in Indigenous Australians. JAE Design Essay Award 2023: Deborah Richards and Angela M. Person’s “Equity & Dignity by Design: Co-creating Guidelines with Planned Parenthood Affiliate Health Centers” in JAE 76.1: Health, edited by Sara Stevens and Joy Knoblauch.

In “Equity & Dignity by Design,” co-authors Deborah Richards and Angela M. Person write about Richards’ partnership with Planned Parenthood Federation of America to develop design guidelines for Planned Parenthood affiliates across the U.S. that center on Wellness & Healing, Equity & Dignity, Operational Efficiency, and Resiliency. JAE Narrative Award 2023: Tania Gutiérrez-Monroy, “Reframing Stories: A Woman and Her Building at the Dawn of the Mexican Revolution,” in JAE 75.2: Building Stories, edited by Marc J Neveu and Lisa Findley

In “Reframing Stories,” author Tania Gutiérrez-Monroy focuses on Carmen Serdán’s strategic use of her family house in Puebla, México in the events leading up to the 1910 Mexican Revolution. This essay contributes to an understanding of the ways in which underrepresented subjects have inscribed their revolutionary actions in such spaces.
