Design as Scholarship | Review Process

1. Pre-Review. The Design Reviews are typically held at the JAE Board meetings in the fall and spring of each year. Design submission are available to Design Committee members for advance review.

2. Discussion. A body of designers and educators with diverse research and practice interests comprise the Design Committee. The committee debates each submission. The discussion aims at unanimous agreement. In the case of projects requiring technical review, submissions may be sent to area experts for additional assessment.

3. Decisions. For each submission, the Design Committee may recommend rejection, resubmission, or conditional acceptance. Resubmissions are invited from projects showing promise but requiring substantial clarification; acceptance of a resubmission is not guaranteed. All accepted submissions are conditional upon satisfactory final revisions, reviewed by the Design Editors, the Executive Editor and Blackwell Publishing.

4. Response. All submitters receive written responses, including a synopsis of review comments approximately 10 weeks after submission deadlines.
